advancement

We used to use Milestones, as written in Fate Core. Now, we use XP. This is how it works.

Conflicts, Contests, and Challenges

Any character that participates in a Conflict, Contest, or Challenge, and is on the winning side, earns XP. If a character is taken out during the encounter, but their side wins in the end, the character still earns XP.

Big Changes

Any time one of the setting’s big issues is overcome, every character in the game earns XP. In order for this to occur, the issue must have been overcome as a result of the characters’ actions. It is not enough for the issue to simply play out on its own. Renaming the aspect may count as overcoming it. For example, Under Seige by Rebels might be overcome and get renamed to, Scattered Pockets of Resistance. That’s OK. That is still overcoming a big issue. They key is “big changes”, driven by the characters.

Do I have to win to earn XP?

Yes. The loser means nothing. Only the princess matters.

Pro-Tip: Conceding a conflict before you are taken out earns you a Fate point.

Reward vs. Difficulty

Each time you earn XP, unless otherwise stated, you earn one (1) XP. However, the stronger the opposition, the greater the reward. To see how much XP you earn, consult the chart below.

Opposition (down left) vs. Character Level (across top)

1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Fair (+2) 1 1 1 1 1 1 1
Good (+3) 2 1 1 1 1 1 1
Great (+4) 3 2 1 1 1 1 1
Superb (+5) 4 3 2 1 1 1 1
Fantastic (+6) 5 4 3 2 1 1 1
Epic (+7) 6 5 4 3 2 1 1
Legendary (+8) 7 6 5 4 3 2 1

Spending XP

At any time during the game, you can spend XP to take an advancement. Keep track of how many advancements you have taken. When you have taken at least three advancements in each category, level up!

Skills XP
Replace one Average (+1) skill with one that isn’t on your sheet. 1
Switch the rank values of any two skills. 1
Increase the rank of any skill by one. 2
Stunts XP
Convert an advantage into permanent character stunt 1
Purchase a new stunt or sell one back for refresh. 1
Swap any single stunt for any another stunt. 2
Aspects XP
Rename one character aspect that isn’t your high concept. 1
Rename any moderate consequence you have. 2
Rename a severe consequence 3

Converting Milestones to XP

Don’t. If you have any Milestones left over, use them now if you wish. Advancements taken with leftover milestones do not count toward leveling up.

Level Up!

Once you take at least three advancements in each category, level up! In celebration of your increased awesomeness, you may choose to do any or all of the following.

  • Rename an extreme consequence.
  • Advance a skill beyond the campaign’s current skill cap.
  • Take an additional point of refresh.
  • Rename your character’s high concept.
